Cool Runnings Movie Lesson Plan helps teachers use the engaging story of the underdog Jamaican bobsled team to teach their students what it really means to be a winner.

After completing Cool Runnings Movie Lesson Plan, students will gain a stronger understanding of seeking excellence, overcoming obstacles, and enjoying the journey.

The allure of being the best in the world and being showered with fame appeals to many of us.

But what is the real value of a gold medal?

Cool Runnings is the true story of the underdog bobsled team from Jamaica who participated in the Winter Olympics in Calgary in 1988. Comprised of sprinters who failed to qualify for the Summer Olympics and led by a washed-up American coach, this extraordinary group of men defied the odds and, in the process, learned what it really means to be champions.

Cool Runnings Movie Lesson Plan helps students see that winning a medal is a hollow victory when you don’t do the right thing, respect your competitors, and respect yourself.

In order to complete these activities, students will need to watch the movie Cool Runnings, which has a rating of PG and a run time of 1 hour and 38 minutes.

Each of our Leadership at the Movies lesson plans includes the following activities:

✅ Reflection: allows students to journal about one of the movie’s themes prior to watching.

✅ Analysis: questions and prompts to analyze the characters, plot, and climax of the movie.

✅ Practice & Discussion: a partner/group activity that takes the principles of the movie and asks students to take action and grow in their own lives.

✅ Extension: a RAFT (Role-Audience-Format-Topic) writing prompt to help students apply their new knowledge.

✅ Lead for Impact: challenges students to pinpoint how the hero of the story exhibited The 12 Fundamentals of Impact and then synthesize how they can apply the lessons to writing their own story.

WARNING: This is a DEEP LEARNING lesson plan to help students employ a LEADERSHIP approach to SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL LEARNING.
