Harriet Movie Lesson Plan helps teachers bring the lessons of bravery, pursuing our dreams, and living by the integrity of our principles to life in their classrooms.

Using Harriet Movie Lesson Plan, students can learn leadership lessons from an amazing woman who lived nearly 200 years ago.

What does it take to live with greatness in a society determined to take away your humanity? Araminta Ross, better known as Harriet Tubman, refused to let her master and the institution of slavery, take away her humanity and her dignity. These Harriet movie discussion questions help us follow this hero from her daring escape to her continued work to bring others to freedom along the Underground Railroad. Students will discover how Harriet possessed an amazing range of character skills.

Sometimes her amazing accomplishments almost seem too good to be true…but Harriet Tubman is as real as they come. And her life can continue to impact us generations later even if politics, culture, and technology appear to be different.

Harriet Movie Lesson Plan teaches us that the greatness Harriet lived with is available to each of us if we focus on the fundamentals of leading for impact. It’s as simple as following our hearts and having the courage to take action to do what’s right, even in the face of punishment and death.

In order to complete this lesson plan on Harriet Tubman, students will need to watch the movie Harriet, which has a rating of PG-13 (thematic content throughout, violent material and language including racial epithets) and a run time of 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Each of our Leadership at the Movies lesson plans includes the following activities:

✅ Reflection: allows students to journal about one of the movie’s themes prior to watching.

✅ Analysis: questions and prompts to analyze the characters, plot, and climax of the movie.

✅ Practice & Discussion: a partner/group activity that takes the principles of the movie and asks students to take action and grow in their own lives.

✅ Extension: a RAFT (Role-Audience-Format-Topic) writing prompt to help students apply their new knowledge.

✅ Lead for Impact: challenges students to pinpoint how the hero of the story exhibited The 12 Fundamentals of Impact and then synthesize how they can apply the lessons to writing their own story.

WARNING: This is a DEEP LEARNING lesson plan to help students employ a LEADERSHIP approach to SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL LEARNING.
